FAQs

What type of gift can I leave to EDA?

We are very grateful for anything that you decide to leave us, regardless of the amount, and it will make a great difference to the people of Edo State.

There are 3 main gifts that you can leave:

  • Residuary: A share of your estate – This is a percentage of your estate after all other debts, funeral costs, administration costs and gifts and have been paid. This can be any percentage you like.
  • Pecuniary: A fixed sum – This can be any amount, every gift counts.
  • Specific: A specific gift – This can be any item, such as jewellery, paintings, property, antiques, or shares for example that we would sell.

How much does it cost to write a will?

This varies depending on how complicated the will is. You can speak to different solicitors to find out what they charge before making your final decision.

How should I word my gift?

Here is some suggested wording, however we recommend speaking to a solicitor when making or amending a will.

You will need our full name, address and charity number:

Full Name: Edo Development Aid
Address: 32 Park Lane
Wembley
HA9 7RZ
Charity Number: 1188371

Residuary:
“I give free of inheritance tax the residue of my estate to Edo Development Aid, whose Registered Office is 32 Park Lane, Wembley, HA9 7RZ Registered Charity No. 1188371, for the general charitable purposes of Edo Development Aid, and I declare that the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other authorised official for the time being shall be a good discharge to my Executors.”

Pecuniary:

Pecuniary:

WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND?

You are able to change the content of your will at any time.

Do I need a solicitor to help write my will?

A solicitor will help to make sure your will is valid and that your wishes are met. However, this is not mandatory. You can also choose to use a will writer or find a will-provider online.

What is Inheritance tax? Can I use a gift to EDA to reduce the inheritance tax I pay?

In the UK, inheritance tax is paid if a person’s estate is worth more than £325,000 when they pass away, this is the ‘Inheritance Tax threshold’. If you think your estate is liable to this, we recommend that you speak to a solicitor.

If you choose to leave a gift to EDA in your Will, your gift will be free of inheritance tax. Leaving 10% (or more) of your estate to EDA, means the inheritance tax rate will be reduced to 36% of everything over £325,000.

Please speak to a solicitor who will be able to provide advice on how to limit the amount of inheritance tax that your estate will be liable to.

How can I add a gift if I already have a will?

If you already have a will and would like to include a gift to EDA, you may not need to re-write it. We suggest speaking to a solicitor to add an amendment, this is called a codicil.
